The Vineyard

An Island for all Seasons

Renowned as a summer resort, Martha's Vineyard is becoming increasingly well-known as a year-round destination.

Martha's Vineyard has 124 miles of spectacular beaches and coastline, 350 years of rich history, and our varied and sometimes eccentric architecture.  And there's much more.  We have thousands of acres of conservation land, a wildlife sanctuary, five lighthouses, and the country's oldest working carousel.  Martha's Vineyard waters are world-renowned for fishing, whether by boat or from the shore.  For culture buffs there are dozens of art galleries, museums, musical concerts, and theatrical performances.

On the heels of summer's bustle, Fall is when the Island kicks back. Days are often warm enough to spend sunbathing, while nights may warrant lighting the fireplace. Crowds lessen, leaves change color, and the pace slows.   The annual Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby brings fishermen from around the world to our waters.   For many, this is the most desirable time to pay a visit to Martha's Vineyard.

In the Off-Season , Martha's Vineyard offers visitors a different ambience than that which is found in the summer.   There is a calm serenity here that the in-season visitor does not experience.   Thanksgiving is a busy time on the Vineyard, and heralds the beginning of the Christmas season with craft fairs and artisans events.   December is a festive time, with every downtown beautifully decorated and a sense of anticipation in the air.   Old fashioned hayrides, street carolers, and the arrival of Santa from the mainland by ferry all help make this a joyful time of year for us all.   Holiday festivities culminate on New Years Eve with Last Day/First Night activities, including fireworks over Vineyard Haven harbor.   The Hob Knob Inn offers special room rates in the off-season.   Come see us during our not so-quiet "quiet time."

In Spring, the Island explodes with color - everywhere you turn there are April daffodils and tulips, June roses, and the scent of lilacs in bloom.   As the warm weather returns and the days get longer, seasonal businesses reopen, boats return to the harbors, and the Island grooms herself for summer.   Everything seems fresh-scrubbed, sparkling, and awaiting guests to these shores.

Island Insights

Our Island-savvy staff can ensure you make the most of your stay on Martha's Vineyard. We will supply you with directions to the finest beaches and the best gallery openings. We can also provide introductions to experienced islanders who will take you fly fishing in the striped bass-rich waters off Aquinnah, kayaking through Chilmark's mystical saltwater ponds or clamming for the elusive quahog at low tide.

Our Hob Knob Inn Signature

The cow in our logo is inspired by the herd of cattle Hob Knob Inn owner, Margaret H. White, keeps on bucolic Island farmlands. Many visitors are surprised to find that there are several working farms on Martha's Vineyard. This Island holds many surprises.
