Rejuvenation at a Martha’s Vineyard Hotel – “Fill Your Cup”, by Abby Gardner, featured on Martha's Vineyard Lodging Association

We’ve all heard a variation of the saying, “fill your cup, because you cannot pour from an empty cup”. In the bustling world of seasonal hospitality, I believe we can all agree on the importance of self-rejuvenation. This is precisely why we decided to open our Hob Knob Spa to the public a few years ago. We take pride in guiding Vineyard visitors to our menu of rewarding and personalized massage treatments, followed by a soothing session in our sauna and steam shower. We also love providing recommendations for our favorite island wellness escapes. Whether your version of self-care is elevated through a bike ride, an exercise class, a cozy corner of a bookstore or simply a freshly-brewed cup of coffee; we are here to share a few of our favorites.

The house itself is a 19th-century Gothic Revival building, originally built in the 1800s as a private home. Porch Dedux
A New England Classic Presented In a New Way

Vineyard Style: When Hob Knob Inn’s General Manager, Diane Carr wanted to up-date the outdoor furniture on the iconic porch at the Inn, she contacted Vineyard Decorators, the Islands largest furniture store boasting the biggest selection of outdoor furniture. The Inn’s wicker furniture was past its prime and proved economically impractical to repair. Diane posed the challenge: how to up-date without changing a thing? The design consultants at Vineyard Decorators went to work. They first proposed Diane look at the “Mackinac” line of outdoor furniture by Lloyd Flanders, an industry leader in performance wicker–all season, durable, woven vinyl–all the while maintaining the traditional and romantic styling of real wicker. Mackinac features a large line of nautical teak tabletops, bold woven frameworks and luxuriously comfortable seating, including bar sets, stools, dining sets, chairs and sofas. The consultants then went to work on accessorizing, incorporating whimsical pillows and throws by Ralph Lauren and Thibaut fabrics. All wicker cushions and pillows use Sunbrella’s legendary all-weather resistant designer fabrics.

“The professionals at Vineyard Decorators came through with guidance, the perfect product line, with attention to the look and style I wanted, all on budget,” Diane says, “I really appreciated their work and we couldn’t be happier.”

The “new” look speaks for itself. Mission accomplished.

Svadore: "The beloved Hob Knob luxury boutique hotel is a deluxe getaway that complements its historic Edgartown setting, while pampering guests with contemporary amenities and excellent service."

The Coastal Table: "We love everything about this island, and during the fall it tends to be a bit quieter and less crowded, making it a great time to visit. For the perfect spot to unwind, be sure to check into the Hob Knob."

Coffee Beans and Bobby Pins: "Upon first glance the porch is outfitted in rocking chairs and gorgeous flowers, so I knew we’d like it there immediately – who doesn’t love a rocking chair lined porch? The location was perfect and within walking distance to not only downtown, but the bus stop which we utilized daily since we didn’t take our rental car over on the ferry ... The best way to describe the Inn is that it felt like coming home. You know how some places just don’t feel comfortable? The Hob Knob is quite the opposite."

Vogue: "The most luxurious accommodation can be found in the heart of town at The Hob Knob Hotel, a classic 19th-century Gothic Revival building on Upper Main Street whose guests have included President Kennedy. After a day exploring the island’s beaches—the hotel provides guests with beach cruiser bikes, gourmet picnic lunches, beach chairs, and umbrellas—enjoy a frosty pitcher of homemade lemonade on the wraparound porch."

Conde Nast Traveller : JFK stayed at this Gothic Revival inn during a sailing regatta…and a nautical theme lives on in red-and-navy common areas. The 17 guest rooms are (thankfully) devoid of the swordfish stencils and floral motifs that adorn most Vineyard hotels. The environmental programme - rooted in extensive composting and recycling, and breakfasts of local, organic berry pancakes and farm-egg omelettes - is a point of pride.

USA Today : Hob Knob, a boutique 17-room property in a former 19th century gothic house in Edgartown, prides itself on its eco-friendly practices, ranging from using local products to composting, but the very personalized service might be what makes it most memorable. Gourmet picnics to go ... or a treatment in the spa, located on property, make guests love Hob Nob.

Washington Life : As an eco-friendly boutique hotel centrally located in Edgartown, this hotel’s luxurious rooms… strike the right balance of relaxation and tranquility in a quiet environment.

Best Weekends : Everyone has their preference for the type of accommodations they prefer; B&B’s, inns or full service hotels. The Hob Knob has managed to combine the best of all three...the intimacy of a B&B, the charm of a country inn and the amenities of a top-notch hotel. Elegant and cozy public rooms, beautiful gardens, a wonderful wrap-around porch, a scrumptious organic breakfast and a terrific staff all come together for an ideal weekend retreat.

Boston Magazine : Couples intent on an intimate ceremony will love the refurbished 17-room HOB KNOB hotel (508-627-9510). The former Edgartown captain’s home is now the island’s only eco-friendly lodging, with low-VOC wall paint, kitchen composting, and a menu of local, organic offerings.

Well Wed : Retreat for a wedding weekend getaway at Hob Knob! This luxurious and eco-conscious boutique hotel in the heart of Martha’s Vineyard offers up plenty of wedding packages to help you celebrate. From verdant vineyard vows to a truly swoon-worthy honeymoon package, Hob Knob is your ideal locale for intimate and one-of-a-kind nuptials.

The Oyster : Centrally along a quaint stretch of Main Street, the Hob Knob is a welcoming bed-and-breakfast with a well-landscaped yard and wrap-around porch. Of course, in high-tourist season the prices reflect its status as a popular boutique – but in a lot of ways, you do get what you pay for. Rooms are spacious and comfortable with Berber carpeting, luxurious European linens and bathrobes, lovely classic American-cottage decor (though some rooms feel more tended to than others), and pretty bathrooms with marble sinks. Other highlights include the free organic, full-farm breakfast, and the fact that downtown Edgartown is a short walk away.

Hotel Guru : 19th-century home turned boutique hotel with manicured garden, sit out porch and classic interiors. Rooms house big beds, bright bathrooms and delicious breakfast in the dining room. In-house spa, gym and sauna are for all to relax in wine country.

Yankee's Most Eco-Friendly Luxury Stay
This 17-room hotel tucked into a 19th-century Gothic Revival home has both the luxury (high-thread-count linens, Vineyard styling, organic breakfast food) and the green touches (nontoxic cleaning products, bath and beauty products made with wind energy) to stake a simultaneous claim to ecological stewardship and sheer comfort. Think of it as Jay Gatsby meets Al Gore.

Yankee's Best Boutique Venue
The atmosphere is neither starched nor flowery-formal. Instead, wicker rockers on the wraparound porch and comfy seating in the inn’s parlors invite socializing and hanging out. Larger-than-average rooms come with all the expected high-end amenities, plus thoughtful surprises such as air purifiers and white-noise generators.

New England Boating:
"...Just steps from downtown... It's got 17 rooms, a couple of suites, it's got beautiful gardens, it's in a residential neighborhood. We stayed here and enjoyed a beautiful, full-service breakfast. They have gorgeous linens, a concierge...if you feel like just relaxing, this is the perfect place."

Hob Knob Fun Reads

Tablet Hotels:
"It’s a remarkably well-preserved piece of Gothic Revival architecture. The interior style is classic meets contemporary, traditional in character but all sparkling new. The focus is on creature comforts, with heaping king beds, plush robes, high-tech in-room amenities (iPod docks, LCD televisions with DVD players) and plenty of space. And many much bigger hotels would envy Hob Knob’s small but well-formed spa."
